Kien, J. E. J.: Korte onderwyzingen op de heylig-dagen ende andere bezondere feest-dagen van het jaer. Tot Brugge by Cornelis de Moor, Boekdrukker, in de Philipsstok-straet. Met Approbatie 1783.

An attractively bound copy, with ownership inscription (Sophie De Baecque), of this rare book of teachings on holy days and feast days. The text is attributed to J. E. J. Kien, canon of ‘O. L. Vrouwe tot Cassel’ (perhaps Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van de Cryptekerk, Kassel?). We find no works by this author in STCV. The content, according to Kien’s preface, draws on 12 works including the Catechisms of Charles-Joachim Colbert, Jacques-Benigne Bossuet, and others. Kien explains that his work is intended for people unfamiliar with Latin and French (p. ix). He dedicates his work to Benedictus van de Weghe, Abbot of S. Winnocx (Bergen).

Printed. One volume, 140 x 85 cms in binding, duodecimo, pp. 180 [4]. Final page blank. Collation: A-G¹² H⁸. Printed ornamentation at section divisions. Inscription to title page: ‘Sophie De Baecque’. Miscellaneous pencil notes to endpapers. Bound in mottled calf over boards, both covers decorated in blind with a single-fillet frame, gilt floral decoration to flat spine. Red speckled edges. Condition (textblock): medium browning, foxing, and spotting to paper; small insect in text at p. 20. Condition (binding): leather to spine abraded, and with some historic repair; slight wear at corners and headcap, upper joint cracking.  

Not in STCV. OCLC shows one copy worldwide (Universiteit Antwerpen). We find also a digitized copy on Google Books associated with Ghent University.
