Burgund, Nikolas [Brunner, Andreas?]: Historia Bavarica sive Ludovicus IV. Imperator. Iuxta exemplar impressum Ingolstadii anno 1636. [The Netherlands?] [c. 1650].

One of several undated editions with identical pagination of this work on Holy Roman Emperor Louis IV (d. 1347; known as ‘the Bavarian’), it is purportedly after a 1636 Ingoldstadt imprint, which is unlocated. No located editions can in fact be dated prior to ours. The text is attributed here to the historian and poet Nikolas Burgund or Nicolas de Bourgogne (1586-1649), who practised law in Ghent and was later appointed professor at the University of Ingolstadt. There is some suggestion, however, that the author is in fact the Jesuit Andreas Brunner (1589-1650), who studied at Ingolstadt and whose materials were used by Bourgogne (see ADB).

Printed. One volume, 19 x 15 cms in binding, quarto, pp. [2] 180. Decorative initials and tailpieces.

Bound in half-vellum and yellow paper. Lettering to spine (Nicolai Burgundi Historia Bavarica). Remnants of a label at base of spine. Red edges.

Condition (textblock): light to moderate browning, occasional minor stains, worming to inner margin of pp. 163-180 (touching at most three letters per page). Condition (binding): minor scuffing and staining.

Provenance: faded blue stamp to title page. Marginal correction in ink to p. 180 (saris > Caesaris). Miscellaneous modern pencil notes to pastedowns.
